Professor Dr. Md. Golam Rahman

Dr. Md. Golam Rahman, a Professor in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, is a well-known academician, media and communication researcher at both home and abroad. Dr. Rahman joined as Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Bangladesh. In a career spanning four decades, he has served the University of Dhaka as the Chairman of the Department of MCJ (in 1990-93, 2004-2005) and as one of the Provosts of the University. He served Papua New Guinea University of Technology as Professor and Head of the Department of Language and Communication Studies from 2009-2010. He was the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Daffodil International University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Prof. Rahman did his postdoctoral research as a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the University of Oklahoma, U.S.A. His Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication was from Mysore University, India in 1986. The degree was the first of its kind offered by an Indian University in this discipline. More than 60 of his research articles have been published in various international and national journals. He has edited and published 12 books and manuals at both home and abroad. Besides his academic pursuits, Dr. Rahman is an active contributor to the current intellectual and cultural discourse. He participates in television talk shows frequently in various channels. He is a sought after participant in different national and international seminars, conferences and intellectual dialogues. The government appointed him the Chairman of The Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the national news agency of the country. He is also functioning as the Chairman of the National Broadcasting Committee for Drafting Laws and Functions. He is a member of Bangladesh Censor Board Appeal Committee. Prof. Rahman was a freedom fighter in the great Liberation War in 1971.

For his outstanding contribution to the media and development sector, the International Association for Mass Communication Research (IAMCR) honored him by printing his photograph on the cover of the book Who’s Who in Mass Communication published in Munchen, New York, London and Paris by K.G. Saur in 1990. He has been conferred with the title ‘Ambassador for Peace’ by Universal Peace Federation (UPF), New York, in 2001. Dr. Rahman has visited more than 30 countries on different academic and professional assignments. He is the Bangladesh Country Representative of Asian Media, Information and Communication Centre (AMIC). He has served the United Nations International Drug Control Program (UNDCP) as National Media Specialist. He was the Vice President of Commonwealth Association for Educators in Journalism and Communication (CAEJAC), Canada.

Dr. Rahman is married with two daughters and a son.
